Bio
Kim grew up on a dirt road in Florida (think gators, grifters, and above-ground pools) and enjoys writing what she describes as “Florida Noir'' - brightly lit dramas rooted in moral ambiguity. Kim comes to television and film following a twenty-year career in New York as a playwright and theatre director. For ten years, she was the Resident Director for the theatre company Wreckio Ensemble. Once hailed “the Susan Stroman of downtown lesbian theater” her work has been produced in NY’s filthiest bars, basements, and black boxes. She is the director/writer of the hit off-Broadway musical LESBIAN LOVE OCTAGON. Now an LA-based TV writer, she has sold and developed projects with: UCP, Pariah, Automatik, MGM-Orion, Escape Artists, Danny Rose Media, Dynamic Television, DiGa Studios, Condé Nast, Milojo, and ABC Signature. Most recently she wrote, directed, and produced her short film JACKRABBIT HOMESTEAD (starring Yara Martinez), a psychological thriller about a woman seeking forgiveness in the unforgiving desert, and directed the Los Angeles workshop production of a new play by Alice Stanley Jr., Executive Produced by Adam McKay. Kim is also writing, directing, and producing her audio fiction series, NOT FOR NOTHIN’: A STATEN ISLAND CRIME, about a small postage stamp theft that unearths a large criminal enterprise. A queer activist and artist, Kim has twice been named one of Go Magazine’s “100 Women We Love.” She was the co-host of the podcast “Queer for the Right Reasons: Lesbian Reflections on Bachelor Nation.” She is the Founder/Producer of Tisch Represents, a community of NYU Tisch School of the Arts alumni elevating underrepresented voices in television and film. Kim also teaches, mentors, and leads workshops on TV Writing for various universities, fellowship programs, and privately. Kim received her BFA in Drama from NYU Tisch School of the Arts. She is represented by LIT Entertainment Group. www.kimberleakressal.com
