Bio
Liz is a Canadian filmmaker based in Toronto. A veteran film & television actor, Whitmere performed as both an improviser and as a stand-up comedian before moving behind the camera as a director and producer. She discovered a love of solving logistical puzzles while associate- producing the Canadian Screen Award-winning The Neddeaus of Duqesne Island, one of the most- viewed series on the CBC digital comedy platform. Always driven to expand her skillset, Liz created a documentary short, Sandra’s Potatoes, with Sandra Shamas, and jumped into directing the Bell Fibe talk show Rapping with Actors, hosted by Mandy May Cheetham, which featured Toronto talent in an unconventional comedic format. She Co-Executive Produced Late Night in the Studio for CBC Gem, which The Globe and Mail’s John Doyle called a “trippy, tonally perfect Canadian comedy." She recently produced Season 1, and directed episodes on Season 1 and 2, of ZARQA, from the creator of Little Mosque on the Prairie (available on CBC Gem). Liz is also Executive Producer alongside Elizabeth Yake (True West Films) on a new digital series, The Drop, which premiered on Narcity in Spring 2023. Liz’s narrative directorial debut, Up To Here, a short film, is a reality-bending exploration of one woman’s unsuccessful search for mental solitude. COLD, her most recent short film, serves as a proof of concept for a feature by the same name – and is a grounded, comedic body-horror about aging, gender-based medical gaslighting, and menopause. Superhero, Inc., an animated short about ableism in the workplace, won the Best Writing Award presented by Netflix at the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge. Liz is an alum of the Women in the Director’s Chair program via the Whistler Film Festival, and has a particular focus on telling relevant stories that elevate communities and individuals not usually featured in media.
